Blue Note Hawaii
July 4, 2018
Performing at a world-renowned Blue Note Hawaii was a cool highlight during the summer. Requiring additional commitment and rehearsals to prepare for this special event, the jazz band wowed the full house in the heart of Waikiki. The students gained valuable experience and felt what it's like to perform live in a "real" venue along with professional guest musicians. It was truly a night to be remembered!

Delfeayo Marsalis, of the world famous Marsalis family, and his group were in Honolulu performing at the Blue Note in Waikiki. Some of the jazz band students went the performance and asked him to visit their school for a master class. And sure enough, Mr. Marsalis, Mark Gross and Miles Labat worked with the students for 90 minutes, on improving their jazz techniques. What a special treat! Many mahalos to these three fine music educators for sharing their knowledge, passion, and aloha.
Watch the master class:
On February 1, 2018, members of the jazz faculty from the University of Texas Arlington visited the jazz band for a master class. They worked on specific techniques and methods for improving their musicianship. Then a couple of days later the jazz band played at the Iolani School Jazz Festival with the UTA crew and performed with bands from other local schools.
